2012: Self-identification, National Culture, Azerbaijan State Academy of Fine Arts
Elvin Nabizade is an installation artist and sculptor mainly focusing on themes such as self-identification and national culture. Nabizade achieves the exploration of these themes through the use of significant elements related to the local culture, one of the most seen of which is the Azerbaijan music instrument saz. Artist’s main inspiration and starting point is the Azerbaijani heritage and identity.
The artist first started experimenting with such elements in his university years. The use of culturally important musical instruments in Elvin’s work set the artist apart from other contemporary artists since these particular elements are not typical of contemporary practices. Azerbaijani Saz used in Nabizade’s works is an instrument used by Ashiqs and influenced the culture of the country by playing an important role in both music and oral literature. The artist does not work with readymades, instead, he uses handmade instruments. The installations made by the artist are in different geometric shapes and some are interacting with the environment. The installations are usually large, presenting a strong dominance over the space and being the centre of attention.
Nabizade’s work was first made a strong statement in the Azerbaijani Pavilion at the 57th International Art Biennale (2017) in Venice, Italy. There the works “Under One Sun” and “SPHERE” were displayed, which were made from 50 saz and 79 instruments, respectively. Under One Sun which was in the form of an arc was interacting with the environment by charting the transit of the sun throughout the day. The other part of the work - SPHERE was a display of different national narratives within the unity of a culture.
