Ramal Kazim is a Belgium-based artist born in Ganja, Azerbaijan. Having academically trained in art in both Azerbaijan and Belgium, the primary medium artist works with is painting. However, the artist’s portfolio includes his previous works in sculpture as well. The artist has exhibited his works in Italy, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Belgium, and Russia. He also was in an artist residency in Milano Global Art Program in Italy from 2014-2015. He had been a member of the Azerbaijan Artist’s Union and exhibited extensively in the local art scene during the years he lived in Baku.
Regardless of the medium, he works with, all the works of the artist are provocative and dark in their nature, creating both a sense of discomfort and awe in the viewer. Ramal Kazim identifies his artistic style as expressionism and the main theme across the majority of his works is the very experience of being a human. Artist depicts the unease, weight, and strangeness of being human through the distorted and dark depiction of his subjects in unique, yet uncomfortable poses, together with the use of a gloomy color palette and despondent compositions. The artist describes his work as an alternative response to what has been regarded as a stereotype and prohibited in Azerbaijan by the quote below.
