Babi Badalov is an established artist who has dedicated his artistic practice to the exploration of language, communication, and the way in which these elements shape human identity and relationships. Born in Azerbaijan, well travelled in Russia and Central Asia, and now based in Paris, Badalov's work has been shaped by his travels and his experience as a nomad, as well as his engagement with poetry and the visual arts.

Badalov's artistic journey began in the 1980s when he moved to Saint Petersburg after serving in the Soviet army. There, he became a part of the underground art scene and developed relationships with other independent artists. Over the years, Badalov has experimented with a range of different artistic forms, from installations to live performances to filmmaking. However, the common thread that runs throughout all of his work is his fascination with language and the way in which it shapes our understanding of the world.

As an artist, Badalov is perhaps best known for his works that incorporate language and play with words. He often mixes the vocabulary of different languages, creating a sense of coexistence between diverse cultures and a pseudo-language of his own. The works are born from the language barriers, limitations, and inconveniences faced because of the absence of unity in languages. These works are a constant exploration of the limits of linguistics and how it can isolate individuals from each other.

One of the things that makes Badalov's work so intriguing is the way in which it reflects his own personal experience as a traveler and a nomad. Having spent time in Russia, the UK, and now France, Badalov has had the opportunity to experience firsthand the power of language to both connect and separate people. His works reflect this experience, exploring the nuances of different languages and the ways in which they shape our understanding of the world.
At the same time, Badalov's work is also deeply political, touching on issues of geo-political significance. Through his exploration of language, he seeks to challenge the borders and boundaries that often separate people and create divisions. He creates works that celebrate the diversity of human cultures and explore the ways in which we can learn to communicate across linguistic and cultural divides.

Badalov's engagement with poetry has also been a significant influence on his artistic practice. Despite Russian not being his first language, he won the Pushkinskaya poetry contest in his youth, demonstrating his skill as a writer and his deep connection to language. This connection is evident in his visual art as well, where he often incorporates text and written language into his works.

Overall, Badalov's artistic practice is one that is deeply engaged with language, communication, and the way in which these elements shape our understanding of the world. His works are both personal and political, reflecting his own experiences as a traveler and a nomad, as well as his commitment to celebrating the diversity of human cultures and breaking down the barriers that often separate us. Through his art, Badalov encourages us to explore the power of language and the ways in which it can connect us to one another.
