Babi Badalov (the name assigned at birth: Babakhan Badalov) is a visual artist from Azerbaijan who currently lives and works in Paris. Artist is best known for his works revolving around linguistics, playing with words, and the “visual poetry” style that he often embodies in his art.

Badalov’s artistic journey started in their youth. In the 1980s, having served in the soviet army, Badalov moved to Saint Petersburg and became a well-known name in the underground art scene of the city at that time. There, Badalov was a member of different artist groups and had relations with other independent artists. After spending several years in Russia, he wanted to settle in the United Kingdom, but his application for asylum was not accepted. After being sent back to Azerbaijan, he was finally granted asylum in 2011 to stay and live in France due to threats of an honor killing in Azerbaijan because of his sexual orientation.

Badalov has been experimenting with different forms of art during his art practice for years. He worked with objects, installations, paintings, and live performances, and gave a shot to filmmaking. The artist has been engaged with poetry since his youth and won the Pushkinskaya poetry contest, despite the fact that Russian is not his first language.

It is not a surprise that the primary element of his works are words. The nomad/traveler lifestyle of the artist has an impact on these works as well. The artist plays with words, mixes the vocabulary of different languages, creating a coexisting state of diverse cultures, and creates a pseudo-language of his own. Badalov touches on geo-political issues. The works are born from the language barriers, limitations and inconveniences faced because of the absence of unity in languages. These works are a constant exploration of the limits of linguistics and how it can isolate individuals from each other.
