Durna Safarova is an Azerbaijani independent journalist and filmmaker. She spent five years at the Baku bureau of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty before going to Istanbul. Durna routinely collaborates with RFERL, BBC Azeri, IWPR, and OCCRP, as well as works on her own movie projects. Safarova is also employed as a commissioning manager for Chai-Khana.org, a South Caucasus-based graphical storytelling portal. In addition to 15 years of experience in the field of journalism, she is experienced in screenwriting, film production, international cooperation in cinema, as well as film distribution. Durna is the author of various short films and has worked on award-winning films such as "Guest: Aleppo-Istanbul", and "All monsters are human".

The director's animated film "The Secret of Faina" was screened for the first time at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The film, authored by Durna Safarova, tells the story of Faina Kungurova, a political activist who died in prison in 2007. This is her first experience in the field of animation. Previously, Durna created an amateur stop-motion animation - creating images from plasticine.
