Education:
2010: Journalism, Baku State University

Trained as a documentary journalist, Gunel Safarova works on long-term film-based projects seeking to interrogate dominant historical narratives and create alternative and imaginative interpretations of reality regarding women's rights and social class inequalities. Her work also explores community and its interactions, as well as the barriers and connections “between people, between places an
d ways of perceiving”.

Following her graduation, Safarova moved to Baku and worked as a journalist for various regional organizations. She is drawn to working in communities whose identities resist domination, where there is a drive to self-define.

Currently, based in Tbilisi, Georgia, her film "What do you want" (2022) has been awarded a special jury mention at Sevil International Documentary Film Festival.
