Hauntingly beautiful photographs exploring identity, cultural diversity, and migration, the Mashtaga-based photographer and video artist Leila has a unique visual language that lies somewhere between documentary and fine art.
Working closely with her community in Mashtaga, Leyla Gulaliyeva helps us to see often overseen regions from a refreshing perspective to highlight their personal narratives, focus on marginalized communities, and invite cultural commentary in their stories. Examining the pride and autonomy of her subjects, Gulaliyeva sought to document traditions and aesthetics in danger of disappearing under globalization as a counterpoint to the exotic vision that can manifest itself in Western images of the Mashtaga people's world.
